Upgrading to 6.1.1 (Macintosh)

Upgrading to the current version of Eudora from your current Eudora is extremely easy. Simply-

  1. Download and install 6.1.1
  2. Run 6.1.1 - make sure it has found your old mail and settings
  3. Learning what the Eudora Folder is
  4. Removing your old Eudora
This is the Eudora installer

Step One

Download Eudora 6.1.1 from old installers 6.1.1 Mac Classic. Double-click on the installer and install Eudora 5 anywhere on your computer. By default, Eudora will create a new folder named Eudora Application Folder.

Step Two

Open the Eudora Application Folder, pictured above. The contents will be similar to (if not exactly) what you see above.

Double click on the application named Eudora. It will launch 6.1.1 and should automatically find your existing mailboxes, address books, and settings.

Step Three

Pictured above is the Eudora Folder - DO NOT DELETE OR RENAME THIS FOLDER. The Eudora Folder, usually found in either your System Folder or Documents folder, stores all your mail, settings, filters, and address books. DO NOT DELETE OR RENAME THIS FOLDER.

Your old Eudora Application Folder may be named something like this

Step Four

Search on your computer for the old Eudora Application Folder. It might be named the Eudora Pro Folder or Eudora Light Folder. This is the folder that stores your old copy of Eudora - check it for any valuable information then delete the folder.

A good rule-of-thumb on the Macintosh is to rebuild your desktop after you install a new version of a software. To rebuild your desktop, restart your Macintosh and hold down the OPTION-COMMAND keys on your keyboard. Keep them held down until you are prompted to rebuild your desktop file.

If Something Goes Wrong

If you launch your new Eudora application and it doesn't immediately find your old mail, address books, and settings - check the following things.

  • Did you start up Eudora from the Apple Menu, an old alias, or from the launcher? Don't - try launching Eudora directly from the application in the Eudora Application Folder.

  • Do a search on your computer for the file Eudora Settings. This file will be found in your Eudora Folder. If your Eudora Folder is not in the System Folder or Documents folder, then Eudora may not be able to find it. Try moving the Eudora Folder into the System Folder or Documents folder.

  • Did your settings and address books appear, but your mailboxes disappear? Go into the Eudora Folder found in your System Folder or Documents folder. Are there files in here named In, In.TOC, Out, and Out.TOC? If so, move these four files into the Mail Folder found in the Eudora Folder. Start up Eudora and see if your mail returns.

Making Your Eudora 6.1.1 Look like your old Eudora

Some of the visual changes in the new Eudora 6.1.1 may be disconcerting at first, but there are changes you can make to modify the user-interface to make it more familiar for you.
